      Our Flock

We have a small flock of around 50 ewes.  We have 5 different breeds of sheep which includes Suffolk, Dorset, South African Meat Merino (SAMM), Ridue Arcotts and East Friesians but the majority of our herd are suffolk and dorsets. Each breed has its own unique qualities, strength and weakness. We have cross bred ewes as well that combine some of the better traits from different breeds to produce a better market lamb.

Our program no longer is focused on only pure breed lambs but more on quality and maternal instinct. We keep ewes that are good moms whether they are pure bred or not because attentive moms means healthy strong lambs when it is time to wean.

Our sheep are kept in pens during the winter with open front shed and straw to protect them from the weather and allow for us to feed them hay and grain. In the summer, the sheep are pastured out in the field during the day and brought in for night so our Great Pyrenees dogs can better protect them when the coyotes are the busiest.

We do not use any growth hormones in our sheep and raise them as naturally as we can. Our pastures are not chemically treated. We still vaccinate and de-worm our sheep and any animal that is sick on our farm does receive medical attention because we believe caring for our animals means treating their illnesses or wounds. Most animals treated are ewes that we keep for breeding but any lamb that is treated is not sold into our natural meat market.

We also sell wool products. Our wool is processed at our local Woollen mill, that still use equipment that was brought out in the early 1900’s.  If you are coming out for a visit and you have time the Woollen Mills does give tours and is definitely worth seeing. We sell batting, roping and 2 types of yarn, Lopi and 2 Ply .
